Greetings from the Imperial Capital

Hello from Washington, where we are blissfully unaware of the latest news, as we have not been glued to our computers full time. Herewith some pictures. First, to get the governmental landmarks out of the way, here’s the White House, looking eminently approachable because stuck my camera lens through the fence.

As you can see it was a gorgeous day in Washington. The sun was shining and the temperature was brisk, not at all the cold and possible rain and snow that was forecast on Friday. I sincerely hope that the snow forecast for Connecticut did arrive. I am not above a little schadenfreude.

We went to the Renwick, the Corcoran, and the National Portrait Gallery. Here’s a statue at the Corcoran that stood alone in a rotunda. It was, I assume temporarily, lit be several projectors shining colored light on it from four sides. The effect was quite dramatic, only partially captured here, since this lacks the element of motion.

Finally, no trip to Washington would be complete without a stop at the biggest tourist attraction of all, the restrooms at the National Portrait Gallery, where a large and happy mob waited patiently to…have their pictures taken with Stephen Colbert, or at least with his picture:

Here’s Stephen in all his glory:

I am writing this from the Mayflower Hotel, one of the most, if not the most, hoity toity hotels in town. Through the wonders of the internet we were able to get a real low cost rate. Our window overlooks the Washington Mall air conditioning ducts, but who’s complaining?
