Closed for repairs

This past Friday, after my most recent post, several running programs on my beloved Mac seized up. I could not “force quit” them. I couldn’t even shut down the computer. The spinning wheel of death spun on, oblivious to my efforts. There was only one solution; I had to put her down. Gently but firmly I pressed the power button, and she sank into oblivion.

When I pressed the power button again she responded with her usual chirpy start up sound, but there was something missing. I could tell her heart was beating, because her keyboard lit, and she made noises when prompted, but she was, so to speak, stone blind. The spirit was willing, but the screen was weak. In fact, the screen was shrouded in the blackness of death.

She is now resting comfortably in the Apple Store, awaiting a graphics card implant. It seems she had a latent birth defect, which only now manifested itself. All her medical costs will be covered gratis by Apple. There will be no visiting hours.

In the meantime, I could continue on, using my wife’s computer, as I am doing now. However, I choose to take this as a sign that I should take a few days off, to recharge my ever weaker intellectual batteries. I understand that there are bipeds out there with whom one can interact on a one to one basis. There is an entire world outside this room that can be explored, and there are books that remain unread. I intend to drain life to the dregs (at my age, the dregs appear all too quickly) in the next few days.

Once “my precious” is returned to me, safe, sound, and sighted, I will return to the fray, reinvigorated, no doubt, by my (somewhat) forced repose.
